When Hugo returned, I was shocked by his appearance. His doctor had referred him on to a specialist, and a short while later he was diagnosed with a malignant tumour on his rib. Life in the interim had been difficult, to say the least – quite extensive surgery had been carried out shortly after diagnosis, followed by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The thinning hair he had joked about when we first met had completely disappeared, and he had lost a considerable amount of weight….
